Serial Rapist on Loose in Austin Preying on Apartment Communities
AUSTIN—After a string of assaults in North Austin, police are worried a serial predator may escalate his attacks.
Five of the six attacks happened in Northwest Austin, specifically near Highway 183, Balcones Woods, and Jollyville and Duval Roads.
Police have increased patrols and reached out to apartment property managers with safety advice. Investigators describe the suspect as opportunistic, and say women should be aware of their surroundings.
Lt. Gena Curtis with the APD Sex Crimes Unit described the suspect as a white or Hispanic male in his early to mid-20s. He is English speaking, with no discernible accent, between 5’7” and 5”9 with short black hair. He usually is wearing a hoodie or long-sleeved shirt.
“We want our citizens, specifically our ladies, be aware of your surroundings. These attacks are happening from early in the morning to late at night. They’re happening in an apartment complex while you’re taking things out of your car, to carrying groceries up the stairs, just trying to walk from your place of employment to your home,” said Lt. Curtis.
Police say the man approaches from behind and threatens victims with a knife. In these cases, the attacks include attempted sexual assault, sexual assault, and aggravated robbery.
Attacks have occurred from early morning to late at night in a wide range of areas, such as apartment complexes, parking lots, or public access areas. Curtis emphasized that the suspect was motivated by opportunity, waiting and watching until a victim was alone.
At this time APD has no leads and is asking citizens to call 911 if they see anything suspicious. Detectives have set up a Tip Line at 512-974-5095 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS or text “Tip 103” + your message to CRIMES.
